Prostate Cancer

Overview

In this section you can find out about the experience of prostate cancer by seeing and hearing people share their personal stories on film.

Our researchers travelled all around the UK to talk to 67 men in their own homes. Find out what people said about issues such as symptoms, treatment, side effects of treatments and impact on family and friends.

We hope you find the information here helpful and reassuring.

Richard Z: I had all the symptoms of somebody who's suffering from prostate cancer, difficult to pee, getting up several times during the night, bursting to go and then not able to go properly.

Mike: So it -, although that was a shock it was not a shock of such magnitude as to send me to pieces. It was a shock of sufficient magnitude to send me straight onto my broadband to start figuring out what do I do to attack this thing.

George: And I was still working and I went to work, but I could hardly get out of bed in the morning and that’s never been my problem. I've always wanted to work.

Interview 1: And he said the decision is yours, and I had no help whatsoever in deciding or advice what was the best for me, which obviously, being the layman, I was a bit concerned and he wanted to know by the Mon-, by the Monday what does this decision that I was going to make.

Richard Y: But it was quality of life aspects to me that were most important in making the decision.

…and those were?

Sexual health, lack of urinary problems, bowel problems. You had to sort of balance these things out because they're all subtly different.

John Z: The hospital treatment wasn't great. The ward was chaotic. But, you know, you're there to be treated, and you go through it and you-,  and it was just, it was just great to know that it was out of my system. That's a really good feeling.
